It Takes Courage To Be A Coward

It takes courage to be a coward –
To lick the boots of a master
as he continually kicks you away.
It is harder to be silent
when you have something to say,
yet bite your tongue, day after day.

It takes courage to be a coward –
To run with an ancient grain,
and play the game and never win.
It is harder to be still
and hide inside your lonely skin,
letting dreams fly away,  into the wind.

It takes courage to be a coward –
To find adventures in the ratty pages
of a dust laden, borrowed book.
It is harder to imagine
being a fish dangling from a hook,
gasping for its peaceful, burbling brook.

It takes courage to be a coward –
To quietly turn a cheek
for another sharp and stinging slap.
It is harder to run out
when the heroes all go back
to bring up the end of the pack.

It takes courage to be a coward –
To see the perfect shadows
dance upon the wall of the cave.
It is harder to live shackled
to a finite, predetermined chain
than to spread your wings,
             and be brave.

Inspired by a quote by Joseph Stalin:

“It takes courage to be a coward in my army.”
